Subproject E1: Transformations in early Greek societies and landscapes
PhD project
“Analysis of the palaeoclimatic development of Southern Greece during the Bronze Age-Iron Age transition”
Within my PhD project, I will focus on sedimentological archives and palaeoenvironmental proxies to reconstruct climatic changes around the Gulf of Corinth (Greece) during the last 5000 years with a particular focus on the Bronze Age-Iron Age transition (1200 – 800 BC).
Predominantly, I will use sediment cores from selected natural lakes around the Gulf as palaeoclimatic archives. The methodological focus of my research is on semi-quantitative XRF measurements that have a high temporal resolution and thus hold considerable potential to be compared with archaeological data from the region. The main objectives are to detect hydro-climatic changes and quantify them in magnitude, timing, and/or spatial distribution and variability within the study area. Additionally, insights on land cover and land-use changes should be generated.
In collaboration with the other subproject partners and other CRC members, the results will be linked with archaeological data and contribute to a larger, coherent picture of the human-environment interaction in the respective period and region.
