PhD poject

The task of the project is the quantitative comparison between geophysical measurements and archaeological excavations using different methods. Measurements of soil parameters on an open excavation would provide a basis from a qualitative comparison of geophysical and excavated features to a quantitative validation and calibration of geophysical models. Furthermore, spatially highly resolved corings and excavations data have a different spatial scale than geophyiscal data usually have. Merging these scales is another major task for this work. 

I will incorporate the stratigraphic information from corings and excavations in the geophysical computations (in particular Geoelectrics and Ground Penetrating Radar) as a mathematical constraints, and combine the two methods in a more comprehensive way.

This approach could be important for future geoarchaeological studies  for a more comprehensive stratigraphic characterization of the shallow subsurface.
