CRC 1266 - Scales of Transformation

Research Activities

The scientific focus of subproject Z2 can be summarized under the keyword Research data management. It contains three main areas of relevant activities:

  • Investigation, Analysis & Communication
  • Viewpoint orientated Data Management
  • Application case CRC 1266

A short characterization with selected activities for each area follows.

Investigation, Analysis & Communication

The first area covers analytical and communicative aspects. Basically, the topic data management, in particular interdisciplinary research data management, was/is examined on a theoretical level. Central questions are for example:

  • What is Research Data Management?
  • What are its objectives?
  • What are the typical challenges?
  • Why do these challenges exist?
  • Which approaches and strategies do already exist to solve the challenges?
  • In which scenarios can the existing approaches be used?
  • In which not?
  • ...

For the purpose of this general investigation extensive literature research was performed. Furthermore the requirements, ideas and working methods of the colleagues from other subprojects were examined and contact with external projects, experts and institutions in this subject area was established. The collected information and impressions were analysed and used to address the already presented research questions.

In the later course of the project, also own ideas and approaches (especially viewpoint oriented data management) were presented and discussed. Highlights among the activities were:

Viewpoint orientated Data Management

The second research area of Z2 uses some of the results of the first one. Its aim is to design and develop a novel approach to data management that explicitly takes into account the requirements and challenges of interdisciplinary research projects. Therefore the major activities consist(ed) of designing and modelling structures, strategies and system components.

The novel approach bases on the separation of data storage and data processing. Information is stored in an universal structure inspired by key-value stores. The specific requirements of the different user groups are modelled and individual interfaces are generated on the basis of these models. After the initial design, the modeling and elaboration of the individual system components became main aspect of this research area.

Application Case CRC 1266

In addition to the general investigation of research data management and the development of an own approach, there is still a third research area in subproject Z2. Its a more practical part and consists of the actual implementation of a data management system for the application case "CRC 1266" . On the one hand this requires organizational activities, such as setting up a project-wide network drive or a wiki for disciplinary terminology. On the other hand the landscape archaeological geoportal "LandMan" is being developed. LandMan is a prototypic implementation of the viewpoint oriented data management in connection with the content management system GeoNode which bases on Django. Within the university's network, the web portal can be reached under the web address http://landman.sfb1266.uni-kiel.de/.
