Spatio-temporal modeling of the spread of Blumeria graminis (Powdery mildew) and Puccinia recondita (Brown rust) using geostatistical analysis techniques

The thesis aims at the spatio-temporal prediction of the pathogens powdery mildew and brown rust on winter wheat in Schleswig-Holstein. The spatial prediction takes place on the temperature, humidity, wind speed and precipitation data made available by the german meteorological survey. These hourly data are interpolated using geostatistical methods in the programming environment R. Then the weather data and additional climate data are used to create model using a machine learning algorithm. This model predicts the probability of the exceedance of a damage threshold, specific to the pathogen. The data, necessary to fit the model, are available for the last 20 years by the IPM wheat monitoring of the Institute of Phytopathology of the CAU Kiel. The developed model can be used on recent weather data to predict the possibility of the exceedance of the pathogens damage threshold, which would suggest a treatment of the jeopardized wheat plants.
